TRAC Award 2025 Honor Outstanding Contributions to TB Care and Research


The 19th TRAC Annual TB Research Conference and World Tuberculosis Day (WTD) , held in Arba Minch from March 21-23, 2025, celebrated remarkable achievements in tuberculosis (TB) care, leadership, research, and service. The ceremony highlighted the tireless efforts of individuals dedicated to combating TB across Ethiopia.

One of the event’s highlights was the TRAC Award of Excellence in TB Clinical Care, which recognized exceptional contributions to clinical care. This prestigious honor was awarded to Sr. Enatmesay Koste of Arba Minch Hospital, Mr. Tesfaye Lamebo from Ataye Health Center, and Mr. Getu Diriba Yadu from the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI). These individuals were celebrated for their commitment to improving patient outcomes and advancing clinical practices.

In the TRAC Award of Excellence in TB Leadership category, Dr. Yewulsew Kassie and Dr. Andargachew Kumsa were recognized for their exemplary leadership and their roles in driving impactful TB interventions and programs at national levels.

The TRAC Award of Excellence in TB Research was presented to Dr. Degu Jerene, whose pioneering work has contributed significantly to the understanding and control of tuberculosis in Ethiopia.

Two distinguished individuals, Dr. Getachew Wondimagegn and Mr. Melkamsew Aschalew, were honored with the TRAC Lifetime TB Services Award. Their lifelong dedication to TB prevention and treatment has left an enduring impact on public health in the country.

The event also highlighted the collaborative efforts of regional health bureaus in tackling TB. The TRAC Award of Excellence for Best Performing Regional Health Bureaus was awarded to Oromia, South Ethiopia, Amhara, and Addis Ababa City Administration Health Bureaus in recognition of their outstanding efforts to deliver better TB care and services.

A special moment during the event was the presentation of the TRAC Lifetime TB Services and Special Award to Dr. Abraham Aseffa, also known as “the father of TRAC”. This prestigious honor recognized his unparalleled contributions to TB services, research, and advocacy over the years.

The TRAC Awards not only celebrated these outstanding achievements but also served as an inspiration for continued progress in the fight against tuberculosis, reaffirming Ethiopia’s dedication to achieving a TB-free future.
